The Barge Operations Supervisor is responsible for the daily management of Seaspan Marine and Marine Petrobulk barge operators, barge fleets, and their safe, efficient cargo operations. This position provides shoreside support for our barge operators, logistics, commercial, operations, and maintenance teams. Key activities include ensuring operator certification, regulatory compliance, company policies and procedures are up to date. Auditing and evaluating operator performance, scheduling operators, and managing time records. The role also assists in developing/reviewing cargo load and discharge plans, conducting ongoing and annual audits (both external and internal), continuous proficiency training of barge operators, and training of new operators.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 10 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.
What you'll do
Promote and reinforce safety in the workplace. Ensure all work is performed in accordance with the company's safety policies and that corporate safety initiatives are successfully implemented.
Hire and manage barge operators, including scheduling, vacation requests, and timesheet reviews.
Oversee vessel operational inspections and audits by regulatory and third-party surveyors and inspectors.
Ensure barge certification and documentation are kept up to date, with all required testing and inspections completed and documented.
Conduct regular audits and safety checks on equipment and safety systems, ensuring equipment is repaired as needed and documented. Monitor the condition of equipment, report required repairs, and recommend replacements when necessary.
Participate in budget and refit planning, preparing repair and refit tasks with the maintenance team.
Prepare and review cargo load and discharge plans to ensure product segregation and volume accuracy, identifying any potential for cross-contamination.
Ensure qualified barge operators are assigned to each job.
Complete required documentation, including operator evaluations, time records, and expense reports, while ensuring onboard barge records are maintained.
Communicate with tug crews, terminal personnel, coordinators, barge operators, and the Senior Manager of Barge Operations to ensure safe transfer operations.
Participate in drills, inspections, and audits, and support investigations when required.
Follow company guidelines and directives.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
What you'll bring
Completed Grade 12 education.
Supervisor of Oil Transfer Operations certificate or Tanker Endorsement with oil transfer issued by Transport Canada (Chemical Endorsement is an asset).
Marine Engineer experience required, with preference given to candidates with experience as a Chief Engineer.
Minimum 5 years of experience in tanker operations.
Experience supervising a unionized team.
Strong mechanical knowledge.
Valid passport and ability to travel to the United States.
Understanding of company operating procedures, policies, and terminal guidelines.
Knowledge of barge cargo operations and mechanical systems.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in computer and analytical tasks, including converting units from different tables and entering data into systems.
Ability to work in various weather conditions and a flexible schedule.
Strong planning, organizational, and time management skills.
Effective problem-solving, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and handle emergency response under pressure.
Knowledge of regulations within the framework of the Canada Shipping Act.

The estimated salary for this position is $100,169 - $120,203. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
