Intern, 3D Visualization (8 Months) (Finance)



Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS-related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.

Seaspan has a state-of-the-art 3D and Virtual Reality (VR) immersive visualization environment called the HoloShip Facility. This facility supports various efforts across our organization using digital 3D models and developing digital twin capabilities. Through collaborative visualization environments, we can resolve spatial integration conflicts, validate and review designs, and incorporate non-technical stakeholders. A digital twin can be used throughout the ship's life contributing to efficient vessel design, optimized vessel operations, and integrated performance analytics. The HoloShip is part of an integrated Digital Ship solution that includes a scalable platform to integrate sensors, communication systems, 3D models and visualization technologies.

The Intern, 3D Visualization will provide day-to-day support to managers and engineers while assisting and coordinating specific activities.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you'll do

  • Develop and Deploy end-to-end pipelines for storing, processing, and importing 3D data for use in web-based 3D visualization platforms.
  • Develop and Establish workflows for content creation, rendering scripts, and visualization system features.
  • Engage and Coordinate with Engineering and Program staff to identify and support use-case scenarios for reviews, stakeholder meetings, Integrated Logistics Support and In-Service Support.
  • Engage in the development and deployment of Virtual, Mixed, and Augmented Reality products to visualize Vessels in their current and future states.
  • Assist in the development and deployment of web-based visualization products to visualize Live vessel data to support in-service support use-cases.
  • Coordinate and schedule activities and use of HoloShip facility.
  • Support teams setting up content and using the HoloShip facility.
  • Conduct day-to-day maintenance and upkeep of the HoloShip facility.
  • Support data analysis activities for New Build and In-Service Support decision points.
  • As an innovation project, other to-be-determined activities will be encouraged based on the skillset and interest of the applicant.

What you'll bring
  • Enrollment in a second or later year of an Engineering, Computer Science, or other similar degree program.
  • Strong interest in digitization, R&D, and innovative solutions in a heavy manufacturing or marine environment.
  • Experience with scripting, Python, C#, software development, automation, and/or game engine development would be an asset.
  • Experience in conducting technical investigations and technical report writing would be an asset.
  • Experience working with AR/VR and/or 3D Modelling would be an asset.
  • Experience with mechanical/marine systems or marine CAD design would be an asset.
  • Excellent computer skills including Excel/Word/PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage their time effectively.
  • Work well under pressure and has the ability to meet strict, daily deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.
